Sunday evening I was having a conversation with my mom about stuff that we wanted to do together.  We both want to go to the drive in theater, but it is currently showing movies that are a bit violent or too much action for her.  Then she brought up the 72 hour kits that our family had been given more energy into finishing when Japan had its earthquake and subsequent disasters that followed.  When I got up Monday morning I realized there are a lot of other things that we do in 72 hour increments.  For example a woman’s moon center moves every 2.5 days.  I have friends in recovery that have a rule about not going more than 72 hours without a meeting.  When you quit smoking after just 72 hours your bronchial tubes are more relaxed.  Recuperating after exercise has 3 phases one of which is 48-72 hours after working out. Semen takes 72 hours to replenish.  After we give blood our plasma protein and platelets are regenerated in 48-72 hours.  Yogi Bhajan also said that as yogi’s it’s good to wash our hair every 72 hours.

My next thought to myself was that I need to pack white turban material with the clothing and make sure I have some Kriyas and meditations packed too.  Because in that kind of situation I’m sure that I’ll be teaching those around me breathing exercises and meditations to calm their nerves (obviously after we’ve assessed the damage and safety of others).  Then I laughed out-loud, I think I’ll be okay to teach in a turban that is not white in the case of a disaster – I’ll pack other colors because white will be hard to keep clean but I’ll plan to be wearing white.  Okay so apparently I like to make myself laugh because planning for the moment that a disaster could happen, produced and even bigger laugh.  Really, when has a disaster come when we’re totally prepared for them to happen?  Most of us haven’t been in a large-scale disaster, but we can be equally affected by small disasters too. Heartbreak, car repairs, illness, death etc… So in a proactive way to be prepared in the mind, body, spirit, the yoga classes I taught so far this week we did the meditation for Atomic Radiation (which is in my 72 hour kit).  I let all my students know this mediation is great even if you’re not affected by radiation.

Yogi Bhajan said this… “If your inside is in a turmoil, this meditation will prevent you from dying.  It can be done anytime, and its effect will be to calm you, to energize you, and to relax you.”

Atomic Radiation Meditation

HOW TO:  
 
  • Sit with a straight spine.
  • Hands in Gyan Mudra (thumb and index finger touching).  
  • Bring your hands up to your ears with your hands facing forward, away from the body.
  • Chant the mantra above 3x on one long deep breath.
  • Touch the tongue to the upper palate in the mouth when chanting.
 
CONTINUE:  For as long as you like.  I prefer to start with at least 11 minutes.
